UNIE Universidad and Planeta Formación y Universidades – Nexia launch a Chair in Artificial Intelligence Applied to Higher Education
UNIE University, together with Planeta Formación y Universidades – Nexia, has officially presented the Chair in Artificial Intelligence Applied to Higher Education, an innovative initiative designed to contribute to the transformation of higher education in Spain through the ethical, responsible, and advanced use of artificial intelligence.
Directed by Rubén Nicolás-Sans, Head of the School of Engineering, Science and Technology at UNIE University, the Chair aims to promote research, development, educational innovation, and knowledge transfer through AI technologies, with particular attention to their ethical, pedagogical, legal, and social implications.
Through this initiative, UNIE University and Planeta Formación y Universidades – Nexia will collaborate on joint projects integrating artificial intelligence to help bridge the gap between academia and the professional sector, aligning higher education with real labor market demands.
The presentation event, held at UNIE University’s Arapiles campus, was attended by Segundo Píriz, Rector of UNIE University; Rubén Nicolás-Sans, Director of the Chair; and Montse Civera, Academic Director of Planeta Formación y Universidades. During the event, the strategic objectives for the coming years were outlined.
These include the creation of a Permanent Observatory on Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education, an Applied Research Laboratory to test and validate classroom solutions, and a Knowledge Transfer and Dissemination Hub open to the academic community and society at large. The initiative will also promote inter-university training for faculty and students in advanced digital skills, support the development of UNIE University’s PhD Program in Artificial Intelligence, and encourage ethical frameworks for the responsible and sustainable use of AI in higher education.
According to Rubén Nicolás-Sans, “with this Chair we aim to place artificial intelligence at the service of higher education, improving the learning experience while ensuring an ethical and human-centered approach that benefits the entire university community.”
Montse Civera added that “this Chair represents a strategic step in Planeta Formación y Universidades’ commitment to integrating artificial intelligence as a key tool for educational innovation and employability, positioning higher education at the forefront of technological transformation.”
This initiative forms part of the broader strategy of Planeta Formación y Universidades – Nexia, an alliance launched in 2025 with Google Cloud and Deloitte to become an international benchmark in specialized training and applied research in artificial intelligence. To date, Nexia has trained more than 4,000 students and faculty members in AI tools, all certified under the Google for Education Partner seal.
