Planeta Formación y Universidades and the Empieza por Educar Foundation have presented the new Observatory for Educational Equity and Inclusion, a joint initiative designed to promote research, training and the dissemination of best practices aimed at building a fairer, more equitable and more inclusive education system. The event took place on 25 November 2025 at the Planeta Formación y Universidades Training Centre in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.

The institutional opening was delivered by Beatriz Morilla, CEO of Empieza por Educar, and Montserrat Civera, Academic Director at Planeta Formación y Universidades, who highlighted the need to strengthen equal opportunities and place inclusion at the core of education policies. Civera noted that the project aims “to ensure that equity and inclusion become real pillars of educational policies and of everyday life in classrooms”, while Morilla emphasised the importance of joining forces to guarantee equal learning opportunities for all children and young people.

The Observatory stems from a collaboration agreement between both institutions and seeks to become a space for critical and rigorous reflection on the challenges of inclusive education in the 21st century. Its strategic lines include applied research, training programmes for teachers and educational agents, and the dissemination of innovative practices through forums, reports and specialised events. The co-directors of the Observatory, Miguel Costa, Director of Institutional Relations at the Empieza por Educar Foundation, and Jesús Enrique Albertos San José, Dean of the Faculty of Education at the International University of Valencia (VIU), stressed the importance of generating useful, transferable knowledge that contributes to reducing inequalities and improving educational quality at all levels.

The event featured a keynote address by Nélida Zaitegui, teacher, pedagogue and former President of the Basque School Council, who examined the pedagogical and ethical foundations of equity and inclusion in schools. This was followed by a roundtable discussion with Xavier Prats-Monné, former Director-General for Education and Culture at the European Commission and President of Teach for All Europe; Aida Valero Moya, Doctor of Education and expert in supranational education policies (UNIE University); Nélida Zaitegui; and Ana Isabel Agustí López, Director of the Bachelor’s Degree in Social Education at the International University of Valencia (VIU). The panel explored current challenges related to diversity in the classroom, supranational policy frameworks and the role of educational innovation in building more inclusive systems.
