International experts from VIU's CIDEES explain how AI will transform university education in Europe
The Centre for Educational Innovation in Higher Education (CIDEES) at the International University of Valencia (VIU), part of the Planeta Formación y Universidades higher education network, brought together three of its international advisors —Guy Haug, Mike Sharples and Iwan Wopereis— to discuss how generative artificial intelligence is transforming European higher education.
The experts agree that AI is redefining not only teaching and research, but also the very concept of knowledge. Haug warns that European universities will face profound changes in teaching, management and assessment, while Sharples stresses that AI opens up unprecedented opportunities for personalised learning and pedagogical innovation. Wopereis proposes moving towards modular, student-centred education systems.
Consuelo García Tamarit, Vice-Rector for Teaching and Educational Innovation at VIU, highlighted the launch of Planeta Formación y Universidades – Nex·ia, a centre for applied artificial intelligence in collaboration with Google Cloud and Deloitte, as an example of this transformation.

During their participation in the Valencia Digital Summit, the experts agreed that universities must adapt quickly, create ecosystems open to innovation, and take on an active role in society, promoting talent, sustainability, and economic development. ‘University excellence in the future will also be defined by artificial intelligence,’ concluded Haug.
